Wonders on Wheels at the New Mexico State Fair

Location:
New Mexico State Fair

Join us at the New Mexico State Fair on September 12 as we debut our new mobile exhibit New Mexico Rocks! In collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs’ Wonders on Wheels program, the Museum has transformed an RV into a mobile museum showcasing the Land of Enchantment’s unique geology.

About the Exhibit:

Our mobile exhibition, New Mexico Rocks!, showcases the enchanting New Mexico landscape that you see all around you—from mountains to mesas to volcanos to rivers— and how it was shaped by our state’s diverse geology. Geology is the study of Earth: what it is made of, how it was made, and how it is still being shaped. This exhibition explores the state’s “geoscape,” can be divided into 5 regions:

  • the central Rio Grande Rift
  • the northwest Colorado Plateau
  • the northeast High Great Plains and Southern Rocky Mountains
  • the southeast Low Great Plains
  • the southwest Datil-Mogollon Highlands & Basin and Range

The landscapes of these regions are time capsules that tell us about the history of our state, from hundreds of millions of years ago to today. Each region is rich with different minerals, rocks, natural resources, and fossils that give us clues about the land and what lived there.

New Mexico Rocks! meets NM STEM Ready! Science Standards. Are you an educator interested in having our mobile museum visit your classroom? Contact NMMNHS Group Coordinator Clare Harmon to schedule a time.
