Clay Science at the Museum

Spring 2019
Explore the Science while you create with clay! Science topics include: simple machines, study of minerals and chemical structure of clay, porosity, sintering, temper, and more! Exploration of Museum Exhibits rounds out these series classes.

$80 non-members, $72 members per 6 week session. $10 suggested firing fee on donation basis, payable to Instructor.  

Purchase in advance, Space is limited. Adult Class 9:30-11:30 a.m.: ages 15 and up; Child Class 3:30-5:30 p.m.: ages 6-14. Limited to 8 participants, to guarantee admission for our class you must register in advance online at Constant Contact.  Online ticket sales stop Noon, 12:00 pm, the day of the event. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science reserves the right to cancel any event that does not reach a minimum of 6 participants.

 

Instructor Bio
Cirrelda Snider-Bryan is a Member of NM Potters & Clay Artists and Mosaic Artists of NM. She has facilitated many school tile murals and mosaic projects, including her time as an APS teacher from 1987-1994. An environmental educator at the NM Museum of Natural History & Science since 2007, Cirrelda is excited about combining the science of clay with its artistic exploration.

Session I – Animal Stories

Mondays Jan 14, 21, 28, Feb 4, 11, 18

Adult Class 9:30 - 11:30

 

Child Class 3:30 - 5:30

 

Animal Stories focuses on creating tiles that tell stories of animals in our lives. We create press tiles from drawings to be able to copy image onto different slab forms. Mask making will be another project.

Session II – Color in Clay

Mondays Feb 25, Mar 4, (not on 11th because of APS Spg Break), 18, 25, Apr 1, 8

Adult Class 9:30 - 11:30 

Child Class 3:30 - 5:30

 

We learn about what makes color - especially in clay bodies, in slips, in glazes. Light, minerals, plant residues create color. We create our own tile color wheel from mixing blue, red, yellow glazes and we play with marbleizing.

Session III -Garden Ware

Mondays Apr 15, 22, 29, May 6, 13, 20

Adult Class 9:30 - 11:30 

Child Class 3:30 - 5:30

Learn about clay’s role in soil while constructing clay creations for your yard.Garden Ware offers both coil and slab construction, with drape and press molds handy. Creation of earthenware “Ollas” for drip irrigation in garden beds will be one project.
