The International Space Station is longer than a football field, and will have a total mass of about 490 tons when completed. Powered by huge solar panels that provide it with electrical energy, it orbits about 220 miles above Earth. Many countries have participated in the scientific research undertaken on the Space Station by its crew of up to seven astronauts. The Space Shuttle provides critical service (including crew rotations) to the International Space Station.
