NMMNHS Book Wins Regional Award

Dinosaur Century named one of 2014’s Best Books!

Dinosaur Century, a catalogue book for our exhibit of the same name, recently received the 2014 New Mexico-Arizona Book Award for best book in the Nature/Environment category. Dinosaur Century was written by New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science Curator Spencer G. Lucas, and features artwork by then Museum Junior Docent Alaina Wiwi and former NMMNH&S Exhibit Designer Matt Celeskey.

NMMNH&S Interim Director Gary Romero said he was proud of this award because it recognized the range of talent that staff and volunteers bring to their work at the Museum: “Dinosaur Century showcases the outstanding skills that we see on display here at the Museum every day, and I want to congratulate Spencer, Matt, and especially Alaina on the hard work that led to this award.”

Alaina Wiwi was a model Junior Docent at the Museum for three years. She has an incredible and consistent artistic talent, and the Museum has even used her skills in permanent exhibits. The junior docents consist of a summer program for individuals entering seventh grade through twelfth grade in school, and ages 13-17.  They learn science content, customer service skills, and public presentation skills while working as educators in the Museum's exhibit halls.  The program is enriched by the active support of Museum staff, scientists, and curators, who share their content expertise and love of their fields with the Junior Docents.

The New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards are given out by the New Mexico Book Co-op, New Mexico and Arizona's largest non-profit cooperative organization featuring New Mexico and Arizona books, publishers, and authors. They are a partnership of over 1,400 publishers and authors who are interested in showcasing and selling books about New Mexico, Arizona, and the Southwest. They showcase and sell books, and help people meet these goals.

Dinosaur Century is available for purchase in the gift shop inside the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science preserves and interprets the distinctive natural and scientific heritage of our state through extraordinary collections, research, exhibits, and programs designed to ignite a passion for lifelong learning.
