Transit of Mercury

Location:
Sandia Deck & Observatory Deck

The planet Mercury will appear as a tiny dot moving across the face of the sun when viewed through a telescope with a solar filter.  The transit will be in progress when the sun rises and continue until a little after noon.  If the sky is clear, see this rare astronomical event through observing devices provided by the Albuquerque Astronomical Society.  Mercury is so small that a telescope will be required, but remember that it is never safe to look at the sun in any way unless a special solar filter is used.  The next Mercury transit won’t occur until 2019, and the one after that will be in 2032, so don’t miss this astronomical event!
