GEMS Program
The New Mexico GEMS Site
We are the only GEMS site in the state of New Mexico! As a GEMS site, we provide training sessions with on-going support to teachers throughout the year. GEMS guides and handbooks are available for purchase. Teachers trained at our GEMS site will have a connection to the GEMS Network across the country, with updates about new guides and ideas for using GEMS materials in the classroom.
What is GEMS?
Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) is a program of the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1984, at least 8 million students have enjoyed GEMS activities. GEMS provides leadership workshops and other support for teachers through a network of regional GEMS sites and centers.
GEMS guides make it possible for all teachers to teach key science and math concepts using the inquiry-based approach called for in the National Science Education Standards and other leading benchmarks, guidelines and frameworks, as well as the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Teachers need not have special backgrounds in science or math to use GEMS. The guides include step-by-step instructions for activities that use easily obtained and inexpensive materials.
